5S

                                        5S Principle

1st S : Sorting
  • This is to identify materials ( materials, equipment and tools, data and information which
    are necessary or not necessary
  • discarding or giving another destination to unnecessary items and providing the
necessary space for the required or necessary items which you required to perform
     the necessary task
  • when so many items are crowded around then it will difficult to find the necessary
tools at a given point of time
  • This Sachin activity waste the time and effort
  • Let us take an example of a simple auto mechanic.
  • If the shop floor is crowded with tools then it is going to be difficult for the mechanic
to spot the appropriate tools when needed. So these should be  sorted, arrange neatly
and in order. they can be put into a toolbox or tool board where it can be easily found timely

2nd S : set in order
  • After doing first S (salting), it is essential to arrange items in the orderly fashion.
  • In the same above example if the mechanic mixes up panel and screwdriver
there is no use of sorting the items.
  • Every equipment or anything should be placed in its appropriate and unique place.
so that a simple eraser or pencil or paper can be found at the same place every
time by everybody in the organization.
  • People should make the habit of listening the troll and equipment to its original place
after it is used. This reduces confusion and avoid wastage of time

3rd S : Shining
  • after 1st and 2nd S (sorting and set in order), it should be cleaned
  • Shop floor should be free of wastage, oil spills, cotton waste, etc
  • The tools also should be clean, the machines should be clean and entire organization
should be free from the the dirt and any unexpected objects lying around
  • Organisation should also identify and eliminate any source of dirt, dust or trash
  • Keep the workplace clean and make items, tools, data and information easily available
and constantly updated in order to support decision making

4th S: standardise
  • Create a set of standards for both workplace and process
  • These standards can be schedules, charts, lists

5th S: Sustain
  • Sustain new practices and conducts audit to maintain it
  • This means previous 4S must be continued over a time.

This is achieved by developing a sense of self-discipline in employees who will participate in 5S.
